LinkedIn has over 100 million users in India alone — and the platform’s recruiter tools mean your profile is actively being searched by hiring managers right now, whether you’re job hunting or not. A well-optimised profile works as a 24/7 talent magnet. A neglected one is a missed opportunity.
Here are the 10 tips our recruiters wish every candidate knew.
Why Your LinkedIn Profile Matters
Before we get tactical, understand the context. When a recruiter like us at CPN Solutions searches for candidates, we’re using LinkedIn’s Recruiter tool with specific keyword and filter combinations. Your profile needs to surface in those searches. Once it does, you have roughly 8 seconds to make an impression before we move on.
The good news: most LinkedIn profiles are mediocre. Optimising yours puts you in the top 10% with relatively modest effort.
The Headline and Photo
Tip 1: Write a keyword-rich headline, not a job title. Instead of “Sales Manager at XYZ Corp,” try “B2B Sales Manager | SaaS | IT Hardware | Gujarat | 8 Yrs Experience.” The extra keywords dramatically increase your searchability.
Tip 2: Use a professional, recent headshot. Profiles with photos get 21x more views. The photo should be clear, well-lit, and professional — not a cropped WhatsApp group photo.
Tip 3: Customise your profile banner. The banner image behind your photo is prime real estate most people leave as the default blue. Use a simple, professional image relevant to your industry.
Your About Section
Tip 4: Write in first person, and tell a story. The About section should answer: who are you, what do you do, what makes you different, and what are you looking for? Write conversationally, not in bullet points. Aim for 200-300 words.
Tip 5: End with a clear call to action. Tell recruiters exactly how to reach you and what kind of opportunities you’re open to. “Open to senior sales leadership roles in Gujarat’s IT sector — feel free to connect or message me directly.”
Experience and Skills
Tip 6: Quantify everything you can. “Managed a team” is forgettable. “Led a 12-person sales team to ₹4.2 crore revenue, up 38% YoY” is memorable and searchable. Numbers make claims credible.
Tip 7: List skills strategically. LinkedIn allows up to 50 skills — use them. Include both technical skills (specific tools, platforms, methodologies) and soft skills. Ask connections to endorse your top skills, as these boost your All-Star profile status.
Tip 8: Add media to your experience. Presentations, case studies, links to projects, or certificates can be attached directly to experience entries. This differentiates you dramatically from candidates who only have text.
Activity and Engagement
Tip 9: Post or comment at least once a week. The LinkedIn algorithm heavily favours active profiles. Even a thoughtful comment on someone else’s post signals activity. Original posts — insights from your work, reactions to industry news — are even better.
Tip 10: Connect strategically and personalise requests. When connecting with recruiters, hiring managers, or industry contacts, always include a note. “Hi [Name], I came across your profile while researching [company/topic] and would love to connect” gets accepted far more often than a blank request.
