Hiring Fast Without Hiring Wrong: The Balanced Approach

CPN Insightsby CPN Solutions 6 min read

The Speed vs. Quality Dilemma

Every hiring manager has faced the dilemma: you need someone in the seat now, but you don’t want to rush and hire wrong. The conventional wisdom says you have to choose between speed and quality. After 10+ years placing talent across India, I’d argue that’s a false trade-off — if you have the right process.

The companies that hire both fast and well share one characteristic: they’ve invested upfront in building a defined hiring process that they execute consistently. They’re not improvising each time. Speed and quality aren’t competing priorities when you have a well-designed system.

The Real Cost of a Bad Hire

Most hiring managers drastically underestimate the cost of a bad hire because most of the cost is invisible — manager time, team productivity loss, customer impact, re-hiring cost. When you genuinely internalise this number, you realise that a slightly longer but more rigorous process is almost always worth it.

Our 48-Hour Shortlist Process

At CPN Solutions, our standard commitment to clients is a qualified shortlist within 48 hours of brief confirmation. Here’s how we do it without compromising quality:

  • Pre-search preparation: Before any sourcing begins, we invest 60-90 minutes defining the role in detail — not just requirements, but the ideal profile, the must-haves vs. nice-to-haves, and the deal-breakers.
  • Active sourcing, not waiting: We contact candidates directly rather than posting and waiting. Our database and networks mean we can reach qualified candidates who aren’t actively applying.
  • Phone screening before presentation: Every candidate on our shortlist has had a 20-30 minute phone screen. You receive people who are genuinely qualified and genuinely interested.
  • Parallel processing: We run sourcing, screening, and client communication simultaneously rather than sequentially.

Three Screening Shortcuts That Don’t Cut Corners

  • Phone screens before full interviews: A 20-minute phone call eliminates 60-70% of candidates who look good on paper but lack the communication or motivation for the role.
  • A focused work sample: A single 45-minute relevant task tells you more than 3 hours of interviews. It doesn’t have to be elaborate.
  • Reference checks done right: One substantive reference call — asking open questions about performance, working style, and development areas — is worth more than three perfunctory ones.

Making Fast Offers

The fastest part of the process to optimise is the time between “we want this person” and the offer being made. In competitive markets, candidates who receive an offer from you 5 days after a final interview may have already accepted elsewhere. Best practice:

  • Agree on compensation authority before the search begins — not after you’ve found your candidate
  • Send a verbal offer within 24 hours of making the decision, with a formal letter to follow
  • Keep the acceptance window to 72-96 hours for most roles
